Art at the museum

Wetherby Senior pupils have taken their studies in philosophy and art history beyond the classroom, at the nearby Wallace Collection.

Before the half-term holiday, our Philosophy Department took all Year 9 classes to this national museum, which houses masterpieces of painting, sculpture, furniture, arms and armour, and porcelain, and is located in Manchester Square, just minutes from our School.

Mr Thornton, Head of Philosophy at Wetherby Senior, explained: “Philosophy is embedded in our School curriculum, with Years 7 to 11 studying the subject in order to develop their critical and independent thinking. As part of our Year 9 module on art history, we took boys to the Wallace Collection to see works of art in situ, and to expand further on our recent discussions in the classroom.”

Visiting the Wallace Collection proved popular with our Year 9 pupils. Barnaby said: “I found it very interesting and really eye opening to visit the Wallace Collection, as it helped me to better understand the philosophy of art and aesthetics. I was able to enjoy wonderful art whilst simultaneously improving my knowledge. Overall, it was an amazing experience!”

At Wetherby Senior, all boys study philosophy from Years 7 to 11 and, although there is no GCSE exam taken in the subject, it is an A Level option within our Sixth Form.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
